As in Mycenaean Greek, Homer used the Greek word to mean ivory, but after the time of Herodotus, it also referred to the animal. It is attested in Mycenaean Greek as e-re-pa (genitive e-re-pa-to) in Linear B syllabic script. The word "elephant" is based on the Latin elephas ( genitive elephantis) ("elephant"), which is the Latinised form of the Greek ἐλέφας ( elephas) (genitive ἐλέφαντος ( elephantos ), probably from a non- Indo-European language, likely Phoenician. Elephants have an iconic status in human culture and have been featured in art, folklore, religion, literature, and popular culture. In the past, they were used in war today, they are often controversially put on display in zoos, or exploited for entertainment in circuses. Elephants are used as working animals in Asia. Other threats to wild elephants include habitat destruction and conflicts with local people. One of the biggest threats to elephant populations is the ivory trade, as the animals are poached for their ivory tusks. They appear to have self-awareness, and possibly show concern for dying and dead individuals of their kind.Īfrican bush elephants and Asian elephants are listed as endangered and African forest elephants as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Elephant intelligence has been compared with that of primates and cetaceans. They communicate by touch, sight, smell, and sound elephants use infrasound and seismic communication over long distances. Elephants can live up to 70 years in the wild. Calves are the centre of attention in their family groups and rely on their mothers for as long as three years. They enter a state of increased testosterone and aggression known as musth, which helps them gain dominance over other males as well as reproductive success. Adult bulls mostly interact with family groups when looking for a mate. Males (bulls) leave their family groups when they reach puberty and may live alone or with other males. The leader of a female group, usually the oldest cow, is known as the matriarch. Females (cows) tend to live in family groups, which can consist of one female with her calves or several related females with offspring. Elephants have a fission–fusion society, in which multiple family groups come together to socialise. They are considered to be keystone species, due to their impact on their environments. They are herbivorous, and they stay near water when it is accessible. African elephants have larger ears and concave backs, whereas Asian elephants have smaller ears, and convex or level backs.Įlephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia and are found in different habitats, including savannahs, forests, deserts, and marshes. The large ear flaps assist in maintaining a constant body temperature as well as in communication. Tusks, which are derived from the incisor teeth, serve both as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. The trunk is prehensile, bringing food and water to the mouth, and grasping objects. Distinctive features of elephants include a long proboscis called a trunk, tusks, large ear flaps, pillar-like legs, and tough but sensitive grey skin. They are the only surviving members of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea extinct relatives include mammoths and mastodons. Three living species are currently recognised: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant, and the Asian elephant. Our only complaint here is the abnormally high RAM usage by Edge. Keep in mind, though, that Microsoft Edge is still in early stages of development and needs more polishing but we think things will get better. While Internet Explorer failed to deliver the much needed performance, it seems that Edge rights all wrongs here. In addition, this article shows how far Microsoft has gone with their newly released browser – Edge. Although these upgrades and tweaks might not lead to Dead Island 2 being a Game of the Year frontrunner for 2023, this long-awaited follow-up definitely feels poised to deliver what fans have been waiting for.Unfortunately an upgrade does not count toward this achievement/trophy, it has to be a complete mod using any available Blueprints. Nothing I've seen in this game seems like it's going to reinvent the wheel, but it's certainly a sequel that looks to make some notable improvements on the original entry. All in all, this shift to a real locale is one that I think will be a big boon for Dead Island 2 and I've been left excited to see its full world.įor a game that was stuck in development hell for the better part of the past ten years, I'm surprised at how positive I've come away with feeling about Dead Island 2. There are other pieces of smart commentary and satire like this in Dead Island 2 that deal with Hollywood, former big-screen actors, and a number of other things that people would associate with LA. Scattered around this sprawling house were a number of hints about their previous lifestyle, one of which happened to be an "apology" message written on a whiteboard that was clearly meant to make fun of the countless fake apologies that YouTubers have posted online in the past following various scandals. This diversity in playstyle makes Dead Island 2's combat continuously feel pretty fresh, especially since item durability will force you to rotate through different melee weapons on a routine basis.įor example, one early location in Dead Island 2 that I ended up coming across was the former mansion of an internet influencer. The way in which your character swings a machete has a drastically different feel compared to using a pool cue. What Dead Island 2 does do a great job with, though, is making each weapon feel greatly unique. Based on what I have played so far, combat doesn't have a ton of depth and largely just results in you spamming the attack button to take down foes. Instead, Dambuster is looking to make smaller tweaks that will assure this is the best Dead Island game ever made.Ĭombat remains the bread and butter of Dead Island 2 as you'll be bashing zombies in the midst of just about everything you're doing. DI2 still focuses heavily on melee combat, it features a similar quest structure as the original game, and its open-world is spaced out across a number of smaller areas. In a general sense, developer Dambuster Studios doesn't seem to be looking to change a whole lot of the formula seen in the original Dead Island that resonated with players all the way back in 2011. I was recently able to go hands-on with a sizable chunk of Dead Island 2 and largely came away quite excited to play the full game. ![]() Choose a format, choose any additional options for that format, then tap Export.Tap the Share button in the toolbar, then tap Export and Send. You can also export and send or save a file using the Share menu in the toolbar: To save the file on your device or to iCloud Drive, choose Save to Files, then choose a location.Choose how you want to send your file, like with Mail or Messages, then send the file.If the Export Details window appears, which shows what might be different in the exported version of the file, tap Continue. Specifically, binaural beats (BB) have been proposed as a particularly beneficial stimulus sound because they involve a complex interaction between brain processes. EEG and MEG studies showed synchronization of brain activity at the frequency of stimulation and its harmonics in and beyond the corresponding sensory brain areas with visual flicker 9, 10, somatosensory tactile stimulation 11, 12 and auditory rhythm 13, 14. A recent approach to non-invasive brain stimulation employs the concept that rhythmic magnetic or electric stimulation could entrain neural oscillations in a specific frequency band, such as gamma oscillations 7, 8.Īs an alternative to electrical stimulation, rhythmic sensory stimulation could entrain neural oscillations. Also, the stimulation may increase synaptic efficacy through stimulus-induced long-term potentiation 6 and thus facilitates neural plasticity underlying learning. It has been suggested that the electric or magnetic stimulation modulates the neural membrane potential 4 and causes inhibitory or excitatory effects depending on stimulus parameters 5. However, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Non-invasive brain stimulation using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to improve learning and training outcomes 2, 3. The current study used the attentional blink paradigm to investigate whether auditory stimulation with binaural beats during the training improves the performance in detecting a target within a rapidly presented sequence of visual stimuli. One proposed method to accelerate learning employs non-invasive brain stimulation, paired with a training task 1. Notably, the outcome of rehabilitation training could benefit from new methods for improving the efficacy of learning. However, successful training requires time and effort. Perceptual and motor skills can improve to a certain degree through training. Therefore, auditory beats stimulation is a promising method of non-invasive brain stimulation for enhancing training and learning which is well-suited to rehabilitation training. The improvement becomes evident not immediately, but after consolidation during sleep. Taken together, 40-Hz BB stimulation during training accelerates the training outcome. In contrast, group B gained more from the 40 Hz stimulation on the second day than from 16-Hz stimulation on the first day. Group A improved more after the first day than the second day. However, participants improved between sessions, with overall improvement equal in both groups. The AB performance did not increase within a session. The rhythm of the visual stimulation elicited 10-Hz oscillations in occipital MEG sensors which were of similar magnitude for both BB frequencies. MEG recordings confirmed a strong entrainment of gamma oscillations during 40-Hz BB stimulation and smaller gamma entrainment with 16-Hz BB. Group A was presented with 40-Hz BB during the first day and 16 Hz during the second day, while the order of beat frequencies was reversed in Group B. Participants were assigned into two groups and presented with BB sounds while performing the AB task on three subsequent days in a cross-over design. Binaural beats (BB) are assumed to entrain neural oscillations and support cognitive function. The AB refers to the lapse in detecting a target T2 in rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) after the identification of a preceding target T1. This study investigated whether binaural beat stimulation could accelerate the training outcome in an attentional blink (AB) task. Together, they’re called clarity characteristics. Diamonds have internal features, called inclusions, and surface irregularities, called blemishes. This is as true of diamonds as anything else. Clarityįew things in nature are absolutely perfect. If the fluorescence is too strong it can make the stone look cloudy or “oily,” which can lower the value of the diamond. Blue and yellow are color opposites and tend to cancel each other out, so blue fluorescence masks the yellow color. Strong blue fluorescence can make a light yellow diamond look closer to colorless in sunlight. In rare instances, fluorescence can be white, yellow, orange, or many other colors. Under the right conditions, you can see fluorescence in about 35 percent of gem diamonds.īlue is the most common fluorescent color in gem-quality diamonds. Although invisible to the human eye, UV radiation is everywhere. Many diamonds emit a visible light called fluorescence when they’re exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Each letter represents a range of color based on a diamond’s tone and saturation. The GIA D-to-Z scale is the industry standard for color-grading diamonds. Even the slightest hint of color can make a dramatic difference in value. Two diamonds of the same clarity, weight, and cut can differ in value based on color alone. Subtle differences in color can dramatically affect diamond value. Three of them-color, clarity, and carat weight-were the basis for the first diamond grading system established in India over 2,000 years ago. Today, the descriptions of each of the 4Cs are more precise than those applied to almost any other consumer product. The terms that people use to discuss the 4Cs have become part of an international language that jewelry professionals can use to describe and evaluate individual diamonds. The 4Cs describe the individual qualities of a diamond, and the value of an individual diamond is based on these qualities. The same relationship between rarity and value exists for clarity, cut, and carat weight. Value and rarity are related: In this case a colorless diamond is more rare and more valuable than one with a slight yellow color. So a colorless diamond rates higher on the color grading scale than a diamond that is light yellow. Colorless diamonds are scarce-most diamonds have tints of yellow or brown. The value of a finished diamond is based on this combination.Ī diamond’s value is often affected by the rarity of one or more of the 4Cs. ![]() When used together, they describe the quality of a finished diamond.
